Starting today, Antwerp fashion museum Momu is welcoming the exhibition 'Dreamshop', devoted to the Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. It's the third installment of a series, that started at the Pitti Imagine Foundation in Florence and also showed at the Musée de la Mode et du Textile in Paris.
Thought of in two parts, this event will be a retrospective of the designer’s work and also a unique threefold experience of his creative work: visual, tactile and corporal.
For more than thirty years Yohji Yamamoto, with his singular vision, has been at the helm of a design movement that has surpassed boundaries in time, convention -and even fashion.
With a scenography by Masao Nihei—recognized for his particular treatment of light in his work on fashion shows—Dream Shop was conceived as a sensory displacement that contrasts black and white: the opposites that have always animated the work of Yohji Yamamoto.
The exhibition pursues, among other things, the fundamental notions of volume and space; specifically how the first uses the second.
80 silhouettes, from the late1980's to today, map a course that highlights the essential principles of clothing according to Yohji Yamamoto’s value of the color black, the use of color as light, construction of an equilibrium, the traditions and techniques of French couture and the importance of air as the integral component between the body and clothing.
The emphasis will particularly be on the decade 1995 to 2005, an era of considerable rethinking of his creations.
Midway through the exhibition, a space is conceived as a boutique: there will be dressing rooms boasting 20 creations to be tried-on by visitors. This dreamshop by Yohji Yamamoto will not only provide visitors with a concrete experience of his clothing, but will also address for the first time the often difficult and critical issue of a fashion exhibition: clothing without the interaction of human bodies.
Each visitor -their body seemingly reinvented by the Japanese designer’s creations- will animate the clothing giving each outfit a new value.
Dreamshop by Yohji Yamamoto, from March 7th till August 13th, 2006.
